On October 2, organisers of the Santoshpur Lake Pally Puja will throw open their pandal of what is being touted as the costliest Durga idol in town. The 12 feet high Durga idol that is being carved out of single sandstone will be plated by a layer of 24 carat gold. In order to ensure proper crowd management so that this Puja doesn’t see a repeat of what had happened at Deshapriya Park last year, the idol will be kept in the pandal till October 13. That translates into five days of extra time from what the pandal-hoppers had got last year when they visited this Puja in Santoshpur. Organisers insist that police is extending all support to ensure that there is no problem managing the large turnout of visitors.
The star attraction of the stone idol weighing four tonnes that is being carved by Subhamita Dinda is the way liquid gold is being used to plate certain portions of the idol. A golden crown, studded with precious stones and diamonds, is also being specially designed for the occasion.
